Volunteer

The Hands of Rescue volunteer program is a rigorous, life changing experience where you will make a real difference to the lives you touch. It is intended to provide participants with exposure and experience in midwifery and maternal health care in developing nations and isolated rural areas. You will have hands on experience. Our volunteers are not tourists.

Currently there are 4 volunteer positions available

The ideal applicant will be :

  • Midwife or doctor with obstetric skills (preferably experienced in a rural remote stand alone health centre setting in a developing country).
  • A good communicator to converse with local staff (who have various levels of basic medical knowledge from CHW (Community Health Worker) to registered nurse).
  • Able to teach local staff in good antenatal clinic practice and refer high risk mothers.
  • Able to upskill local staff in Obstetric emergencies.
  • Have general nursing skills and able to work as a team with local staff.
  • Passion for their work and love for traditional culture. 
  • Able to work in remote setting. 

Other notes: Centres average 150-200 deliveries per year.  Labor wards are basic.  Communication with referral hospital is by local telephone network or HF radio.   Caesars are performed in the referral hospital only.   

WARNING: This is a rigorous real life program. You will need to have relevant qualifications in midwifery, nursing or other medical credentials. Think carefully before applying, the tasks may at times be confronting but the rewards and learning to be gained from the experience are immeasurable.
